Joo Seng

Apartment, 1200 sqft

Drawing inspiration from the apartment's original feature, a dramatic yet distinct design was birthed. Bring curves to the foreground, add furniture and fittings with curved edges, and pair them with the subdued yet vibrant Morandi colour palette. Marrying colours and textures to bring in the mood and feel of a home, the concept of this apartment in Joo Seng was inspired by the Morandi colour palette and the careful selection of sculptures. Exhibiting boldness through the subtle nuances. This modern contemporary space exudes a soothing elegance; without a tendency to flaunt.

Interestingly, one of the aspects of the project was complementing the design with feng shui principles. The challenge was to create a design concept that embraced the ideology of feng shui but also resulted in a fun and energetic environment, which we achieved through the playful exploration of colours and textures.

The Morandi colour palette was also an inspiration, and we played with shades for added contrast. I love the layout and spaciousness of the home, and we used lines and different colours and shades to demarcate the various spaces. The home is really eclectic and explores textures and colour, creating an energetic atmosphere and reflecting the family members’ dynamic personalities.

Texture to Delineate Spaces

A vision to remake their apartment into a Scandinavian haven, composed of clean lines and soothing muted tones. Their home, a 40-year-old resale flat, however, came with its own structural quirks. Almost every corner in the house, from cornice to the walls, ends in a curve. For the owners, it was therefore imperative that the design conceived for their home seamlessly considered and incorporated these curved edges.

The design approach towards the home’s curvy challenge inspired the owners’ confidence, and they quickly entrusted full creative control into his hands, leaving the decision of aesthetics also to him. The wider colour range included sage green, coral, and sky blue, a palette derived from the paintings of the celebrated Italian artist Giorgio Morandi. Using the method of colour-blocking, each space in the 1,200sq ft home was designated a specific colour, thus imbuing them with distinct vibes.

One of the challenges faced was to make the house look more spacious, particularly the living and dining area. Curved shapes, together with the careful contrast of colours and materials in various areas, were able to give the illusion of a bigger space.
